October 2023

As you know Gill Smith and husband David are in the process of leaving the Island for pastures new in East Sussex, a beautiful area of the UK, in order to be closer to her family.  This means that Gill has, very reluctantly, stepped down as Membership Secretary.  Gill has done a wonderful job over the past three years. We will miss her happy smile and wish them both all the very best for the future and many happy years to come in their new home. I'm sure they will pop back to see us from time to time. All is not lost however as we welcome Louise Whitelegg, a fairly new member of the Club, to the role. Louise has excellent computer skills and is more than happy to take on the role of Membership Secretary.  I'm sure she will be perfect for the role.

The New Year lunch will take place on Sunday 14th January 2024 at the  Talk of the Town, Nobles Park, Douglas (w3w: vibe.drive.list   SC382772) This is a wonderful way to welcome in 2024 in the company of friends, old and new, whilst enjoying a delicious lunch.  If previous years are anything to go by there will be lots of laughter and chatter with members pooling their knowledge to win fantastic quiz prizes.  Friends and family are also most welcome to join us.  Full details of the event will follow soon.

Our Christmas carol service will take place as usual at the wonderful little church of St. Luke's in Baldwin at 3pm on Sunday 10th December. (w3w: soulless.loans.redrawn  SC360823). The afternoon will start at 1.30pm with a short walk in the surrounding Baldwin countryside. The carol service will begin at 3pm and this will be followed by a ‘bring and share’ tea.  Those not wishing to walk are most welcome to join us just for the carol service and tea afterwards. Family and friends are also warmly welcomed.  This always proves to be a delightful afternoon and we hope to see you there

We are delighted to announce this year's  Winter Talks programme. As usual all talks will take place at Mylchreest Court in Peel  (w3w: weep.lanes.tablets and grid reference SC249836). Please park at the QE11 car park or alternatively at the football field car park. Refreshments will be provided at the end of each talk. BEES IN BURUNDI with Harry Owens  BEM - 7pm Wednesday 15th November 2023 Despite a few technical hitches with the media equipment Harry managed to save the day with his excellent talk about his visit to Burundi with Christian Aid to teach the local women the best way to keep bees in order to make a decent living from them.  Everyone enjoyed the talk and lots of questions were fired at Harry who was able to answer all of them in detail.  Thank You Harry, we had a great evening in your company.   THE LAXEY MINES RESEARCH GROUP with Peter Geddes MBE
